This sector trains engineers responsible for finding innovative solutions, leading a multidisciplinary team and intervening at all levels of an integrated production system. The products or processes resulting from a concurrent approach present performances that they could not have achieved by considering these different techniques separately. Robots, automated guided vehicles, active suspensions, camcorders, interactive laser disc players, etc., are the result of a mechatronic approach.

Mechatronics is a new discipline ensuring the synthesis of techniques from mechanical engineering, electronics, automation and computing to implement new ways of designing and producing new, more efficient products by integrating more and more so-called 'intelligent' functions. It is now present in all major sectors of industry: transport, consumer goods, capital goods.
